Extra Dry #13

Luca Maria Patella
2016/07/17

Extra DRY is a project of collaboration between Peep-Hole and DRY Cocktails & Pizza. The initiative comes from a shared desire to take contemporary art out of its usual places and experiment with its possible insertion in different contexts. For the third consecutive season, videos will be shown by Anna Valeria Borsari, Ugo La Pietra, Luca Maria Patella and Franco Vaccari, each for a period of three months.
The third appointment of Extra Dry is devoted to Luca Maria Patella (Rome, 1934), among the first to experiment with multimedia and the filmic possibilities of videotape.

Luca Maria Patella presents a single work here: Grammatica dissolvente – Gazzùff! Avventure & cultura (1974-75). It can be traced back to what the artist calls “self-documentations in progress,” featuring the simultaneous presence of different media: film, photography, overhead projector, writing, publishing, performance. The four sequences of which it is composed constitute a sort of anthology of practices: an excerpt from the unfinished film Lu’ capa tella (16mm, 1972); documents taken from the Gazzette Ufficiali (1972-1974) and the performances done at Galleria L’Attico in Rome in those years; the “dissolving grammar,” the fade in-out projection of a series of word games and images using a machine invented by the artist; and, finally, the film of a performance in which Patella writes a series of thoughts on the role of the artist and art in society on a luminous slate.

Luca Maria Patella (Rome, 1934). His background has been: artistic (in Rome and Paris), scientific (Structural Chemistry) and psychoanalytic (with Ernst Bernhard). Patella is known for the complex semantic and technical relationships found in his work: painting, object-sculptures, installations, photographs, films and videos, graphics works, books and writings. His works can be found in the Museum Collections such as: Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, MoMA, New York, Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica and Museo-Laboratorio dell’Università La Sapienza, Rome; CSAC, Parma; Archivio di Nuova Scrittura, Milan (in comodato al MUSEION di Bolzano); MART, Rovereto; Bibliothèque Nationale, Parigi; Polaroid Corporation, Boston; MUHKA, Antwerp.
